More about Prof Hu
With over 15 years of clinical experience, Prof Hu has been practising Chinese Medicine since 2009. He completed his PhD at the University of Pretoria in 2022 within the minimum completion timeframe, demonstrating strong academic rigour alongside clinical expertise.
Prof Hu’s international standing is further reflected through his appointment as a Visiting Scholar at the Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in 2023, as a Distinguished Expert in 2025 at the Affiliated People’s Hospital of the Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and as Director of the International Institute of Sichuan Renowned Medical Scholars. These appointments underscore his role in bridging Chinese medical excellence with African healthcare systems.
Beyond clinical practice, Prof Hu is a recognised leader in education and professional training. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and academic books, with a strong focus on high-quality education, innovative teaching approaches, and improved learning outcomes. His work supports the development of competent, ethical, and globally competitive Chinese Medicine practitioners.
Prof Hu currently serves as the Chairperson of the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Africa and is the Editor-in-Chief of two international journals, Complementary Medicine: Education and Research and Chinese Medicine in Africa. He has also held senior advisory and leadership roles with the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, the South African Bureau of Standards, and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority, contributing to policy, standards development, and professional regulation.
Clinically, Prof Hu offers patient-centred, evidence-informed Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture care, with particular expertise in the management of chronic pain and arthritis, fatigue, infertility, respiratory conditions, insomnia, menopausal syndromes, stroke rehabilitation, cancer supportive care, and weight management. His approach integrates traditional wisdom with modern clinical insight to support long-term health, functional recovery, and improved quality of life.
